What Is Chōjū Giga?
“Chōjū-giga” is a Japanese picture scroll created around the 12th to 13th centuries.
The word “Chō” means bird, “Jū” means beast, and “Giga” means funny or playful pictures.
This work consists of four long scrolls. Each scroll shows animals with different themes.
Although the artist is unknown, it is believed that several Buddhist monks drew it.
Today, it is designated as a National Treasure and is kept at Kōzan-ji Temple in Kyoto.
Also, it appears in Japanese elementary school textbooks, so many Japanese people are familiar with it.
Why It’s Called Japan’s Oldest Manga
“Chōjū-giga” is often called Japan’s oldest manga.
The most famous scroll is the “Kō Scroll.”
It shows animals like rabbits, frogs, and monkeys acting and playing like humans.
For example, frogs and rabbits wrestle, and monkeys read Buddhist sutras.
There are no words written, but the story is clear through the animals’ movements and expressions.
This makes the work fun and mysterious.
Also, the flow of pictures is similar to modern “panel comics.”
The use of “anthropomorphism” — giving animals human traits — and the humorous style connect it to today’s manga culture.

「鳥獣戯画」とは？
「鳥獣戯画（ちょうじゅうぎが）」は、12〜13世紀ごろに作られた日本の絵巻物です。
「鳥」はとり、「獣」はけもの、「戯画」はおもしろく描いた絵という意味です。
この作品は全4巻から成る長い絵巻物で、それぞれの巻にちがうテーマの動物たちが登場します。
作者ははっきりとは分かっていませんが、何人かの僧（お坊さん）によって描かれたと考えられています。
現在は国宝に指定されており、京都・高山寺に伝わる貴重な文化財です。
また、日本の小学校の教科書にも掲載されているため、多くの日本人に親しまれています。
日本最古の「漫画」といわれる理由
この「鳥獣戯画」は、「日本最古の漫画」ともいわれます。
もっとも有名なのは「甲巻（こうのまき）」です。
うさぎやカエル、サルなどの動物たちが、人のように動いたり遊んだりしている様子が生き生きと描かれています。
たとえば、カエルとうさぎが相撲（すもう）をとっていたり、サルがお経を読んでいたりします。
言葉は書かれていませんが、動きや表情からストーリーが自然と伝わってきます。
この点が、楽しく不思議な作品の特徴です。
また、絵の流れは今の「コマ割り漫画」にも似ています。
動物たちが人間のように行動する「擬人化（ぎじんか）」の表現や、ユーモアをまじえた構成などは、現代の漫画文化につながる要素といえるでしょう。
