Matsumoto Castle – Beauty in Black and White

Today, I’m writing about my favorite Japanese castle, Matsumoto Castle.
It is a national treasure. I have visited many times since I was a child.

What is Matsumoto Castle? (National Treasure)

The main keep was built around 1593-1594. It is Japan’s oldest castle designated as a national treasure.
Other national treasure castles include Himeji, Inuyama, Hikone, and Matsue Castles.

Matsumoto Castle is very beautiful with a striking black and white contrast.

Inside the Original Main Keep

Some castles have museum-like interiors. But Matsumoto Castle lets you experience how it was long ago.
Inside the main keep, you climb steep stairs. You take off your shoes, and the wooden floors and pillars creak.
The interior is all wood with almost no decoration, keeping the old atmosphere.

The walls have small openings called “hazama.” From these holes, arrows and guns were fired at enemies outside.

The stairs get steeper as you go higher. From the top floor, you can see Matsumoto city and the Northern Alps.
Knowing that guards watched for enemies here shows why the height mattered.

The Quiet Charm Around the Castle

Personally, my favorite part of Matsumoto Castle is the stone walls. Grass grows between the stones, and the castle’s shadow reflects in the moat.
It’s not flashy but has a silent presence. That’s the kind of charm Matsumoto Castle has.

Unusually for a castle, it is located on flat land. You can see both the castle and the Northern Alps at the same time.
On clear days, the monochrome castle, the Alps, and the old town look very beautiful together.

The castle is popular inside too, and it is often crowded with tourists nowadays.

Matsumoto Castle offers not just historical weight but also new discoveries every visit.
It is a treasured castle that should remain in people’s hearts for a long time.

Near Matsumoto Castle, you’ll also find Kyu Kaichi School, a symbol of Meiji-era education.

今日は私が一番好きな日本のお城「国宝　松本城」について書きます。
子供の頃から何度も行っています。

国宝・松本城とは

天守の築造年代は1593～4年と考えられ、日本最古の国宝のお城です。
他に国宝のお城は、姫路城、犬山城、彦根城、松江城があります。

松本城は黒と白のコントラストがきいたとてもきれいなお城です。

昔のままの天守の中へ

お城の中は博物館のようになっているものもあります。しかし松本城は当時の様子を知ることができます。

天守に入ると、急な階段を上ります。
靴を脱いであがると、床や柱がギシギシと音を立てます。
内部は木造で、装飾などはほとんどなく、昔のままの雰囲気が残っています。

壁には「狭間（はざま）」という小さな穴があります。ここから矢や鉄砲を撃って外の敵を攻撃していたことがわかります。

そして、上の階に行くほど階段が急になります。
最上階からは、松本の街と北アルプスが見えます。
昔はここから敵の動きを見ていたのだと思うと、この高さにも意味があることがよくわかります。

お城の周囲にある静かな魅力

個人的に、松本城でいちばん好きなのは石垣まわりです。
石と石のあいだに根を張る草や、堀に映る天守の影。

華やかさではなく、無言の存在感。
松本城には、そういう魅力があるように思います。

そしてお城にしては珍しく、平地にあり、お城と北アルプス山脈が同時に見られる立地条件です。
晴れた空に、モノトーンの松本城、北アルプス、松本の城下町がとてもきれいに映えます。

お城の中でも人気があり、最近はいつでも観光客の方で溢れています。
松本城は歴史の重みを感じられるだけでなく、いつ訪れても新しい発見があります。
派手さはなくても、これからも静かな存在感で人々をひきつけるお城だと思います。

松本城のすぐ近くには、明治時代の教育を象徴する「旧開智学校」もあります。
