Zenkoji: An “Open Temple” for Everyone

善光寺 (Zenkoji Temple) is a landmark of Nagano City and one of Japan’s most significant Buddhist sites.
Its history dates back to the 7th century, boasting over 1,400 years of tradition.

This temple is unique because it welcomes everyone, regardless of their Buddhist sect.
Therefore, it is widely known throughout Japan as an “open temple.”
The main image is the 一光三尊阿弥陀如来 (Ikko Sanzon Amida Nyorai).
It is said to be one of the oldest Buddhist statues brought to Japan.

Living History and Morning Prayers

The Main Hall of Zenkoji was rebuilt during the Edo period.
Today, it is designated as a National Treasure.

Although the temple has a long history, it remains a very active place of worship.
Many visitors come here every day to offer their personal wishes.

Every morning at sunrise, a ritual called “お朝事 (O-asaji)” takes place.

This involves walking through a pitch-black corridor located beneath the Main Hall.

Since there is no light at all, you must move carefully by touching the wall.
Along the way, you will find the “極楽の錠前 (Gokuraku no Jomae ,Key to Paradise)” directly beneath the hidden Buddha.
Touching this key creates a direct bond with the Buddha, 阿弥陀如来 (Amida Nyorai).
It is an important tradition because it is believed to ensure your path to the Pure Land in the afterlife.

The Culture of Omamori (Charms)

In Japan, “お守り (Omamori, charms)” are a very common part of daily life.
They are seen as spiritual support that carries the Buddha’s power.
People keep them to stay focused on their personal goals and wishes.

You can choose a specific charm based on your needs, such as health, safety, or academic success.
These are more than just souvenirs; they are a tradition deeply rooted in Japanese culture.

Zenkoji in Modern Pop Culture

Zenkoji is a historic site, but it also appears in modern media.
Most notably, it is featured as a key setting in the movie Detective Conan: The Scarlet Flashback.

Because of this, many fans visit the temple for “anime pilgrimages.”
This blend of ancient history and modern fiction makes the experience even more engaging.

Interestingly, visiting only Zenkoji is sometimes called a “片参り(Katamairi, one-sided pilgrimage)” .
Tradition says that your blessings are only complete once you visit both Zenkoji and its partner temple.
